Diversity

The tech industry comprises mostly [hedgehogs not foxes].

Mono-culture is the pathological idea that there is one singular, correct way to do things. It is the basis of ideologies like Communism, Neoliberal Capitalism, and also radical religions. It remains strong today in contrast to open-mindedness and plauralism. Left unchallenged monocultures are expansive and totalitarian, but also weak.

Note: This is a very different concept from free and open standards for interoperability, which are a very good thing and tend to boost diversity.

The importance of diversity in technology

Bananas

"A banana"

About 70 years ago the world's banana crops were almost wiped out to the point of extinction. A few giant producers believed they had perfected the ultimate breed, a seedless, sweet and curved variety similar to the modern Cavendish. Then a fungal infection called [Panama Disease] swept the globe. Only a handful of independent farmers not captured by the giant supermarkets still cultivated alternative seed strains. From these it was possible to re-establish a viable banana industry.

This lesson should be emblazoned above the doorway of every business and technology school. Today we see the same disaster unfold in cybersecurity. Malware tends to adapt to the dominant ecosystem. In this case there is no safety in numbers, only more vulnerability. As a strategy, building your entire shop around Google or Microsoft is completely bananas
